Hakone

Hakone is ideally located 80 km west from Tokyo, and is part of the Fuji Hakone Izu National Park.
The Hakone Volcanoes have been active from about 400 thousand years ago and are still active today.
The hot springs coming from the volcanic activities lure many tourists from in and outside Japan. |

Owakudaini
It is the crater that was formed in the last phreatic eruption of the highest mountain in Hakone, Kamiyama, 3000 years ago, and is still steaming today.
KUROTAMAGO
Eggs boiled with acidic thermal mud that is believed to elongate your lifespan 7 years for each egg you eat.

Lake Ashinoko is a long, thin lake with a circumference of 20 km. The gUpside-down Fujih that you may see from the southern side of the lake is one of the most famous sightseeing spots of Hakone.

Hakone Checkpoint
It was a crucial checkpoint where especially guns were stopped from being brought into Edo (present Tokyo) for safety reasons. Wives of daimyos were carefully watched so they would not escape or be taken away from Edo. |

Art Collection of Hakone@
Of the 3,000 pieces of artwork it holds (12th Century/Kamakura Period to the 20th Century/ Showa Period), approximately 1500 are usually exhibited here, including Hokusai Katsushika's famous Ukiyoe paintings.

Traditional Handicraft (Yosegizaiku)
Yosegi Handicraft is made by combining different shades of wood over the surface of things.
It is a traditional craftwork of Japan.

The Hakone Open-air Museum
About 400 artworks of the world-renowned masters of the 20th century such as Rodin, Bourdelle, Miro, and Henry Moore, as well as the great sculptors of Japan are exhibited mainly in the open garden and the Picasso Pavilion.

* It is convenient to go to Hakone by car, but the Hakone Free Pass gives very good value if you are riding the cable car, ropeway, and pleasure boat on Lake Ashinoko.
